The Chair starts the knowledge transfer of a project made in collaboration with the World Health Organisation and other international researchers (December 2021)

The project titled Factors shaping the global political priority of addressing elder abuse started in 2020, following the launch of the Decade of Healthy Ageing World Health Organisation (WHO).

 This international collaboration has the principal goal of identifying, with key informants involved in countering mistreatment towards older adults, the issues and priorities that must be in the forefront in the international political agendas for years to come.

To achieve this, the research team has completed a desk review type of document inventory  by analysing 123 scientific articles and documents from the grey literature, as well as doing 26 semi-directed interviews with key informants around the globe.

Different themes came from these document analyses and research interviews, notably :

• The inherent complexity of this issue, as much for the decision makers of public policies than for psychosocial practitioners;
• The presence, in the background, of ageism making the prioritisation of actions to counter mistreatment difficult within governments;
• The lack of awareness to the issue among the decision makers, as well as the presence of doubt about the magnitude of mistreatment;
• The absence of an intervention program based on conclusive data showing the efficiency makes funding such action difficult.

The distribution of knowledge has started during the month of October 2021 by submitting an article to a scientific journal with a high score and three scientific communications:
