A video recording hosted by Marie Beaulieu is placed on-line as part of the national consensus-building approach against mistreatment in France. (September 2020)
As one of several activities in preparation for France’s national day of consensus-building against mistreatment on September 23, Marie Beaulieu participated in a web conference on the knowledge drawn from international research on this subject.
This activity first includes a 30-minute video recording in which Marie Beaulieu presents different reflections on the mistreatment of older adults, such as:
- The multiple elements included in current Quebec and international definitions such as, ‘violence’, ‘negligence’, ‘a relationship of trust’, ‘intentionality’, and ‘consequences’;
- The benefits associated with a concerted and intersectoral approach in adopting a shared vocabulary for professional practice and scientific comprehension of this social problem;
- The necessary and delicate balance between the approach of the ‘protection’ of older adults in vulnerable situations and the promotion of ‘self-determination’ in those with all their decisional capacities intact;
- The presence or absence of components associated with ‘vulnerability’ in situations of mistreatment and the potential obstacles to a desire to install unilateral protective measures ensuring the security of older persons;
- The existence of organisational and institutional components at the heart of situations of mistreatment in all locations frequented by older persons, not just in residential facilities;
Secondly, a synchronised on-line exchange period on September 17 with Marie Beaulieu (Canada) and Hillary Brown (Great Britain) in which participants can further prepare for the September 23 meeting by expanding on the themes mentioned above.
