RESERCH PROBLEM :

The socio-health crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic has had multiple consequences (financial, physical, psychological, social) for the Quebec population. Various sub-groups of the population were more affected than others. Such is the case with older adults living in residences

In response, numerous organisations rolled up their sleeves and tried to counter the adverse effects experienced by older adults in this century’s unprecedented health phenomenon.

GOAL OR RESEARCH QUESTION :

As a result, it is important to document and analyse, from a positive angle, the factors that favoured the creation, maintenance and reinforcement of an environment of “good treatment” for older adults living in residences.

OBJECTIVES :

This study seeks to document the organisational, individual and interpersonal elements in these settings that give meaning to different participants’ behaviours (staff, interveners, volunteers) during the pandemic and the effects on their involvement.

METHODOLOGY :

A case study will be done in two private, non-profit residences in the Eastern Townships region. One residence was affected by COVID-19; the other was spared. Interviews will be conducted with management, employees, and volunteers as well as residents and their family members, to give meaning to their contributions to professional practices in these challenging times.

This research’s practical implication will be the development of a “Guide to Good-Treatment in Action”. The guide may serve to consolidate and improve salutogenic practices in community living settings for older adults. The goal is to strengthen the positive actions taken in these settings when faced with a real crisis and support the general knowledge of the “good treatment” approach that is still little-documented in Quebec.

WORK PROGRESS :

Since obtaining the permission of the Ethics Committee of the University of Sherbrooke, the interviews have started. To this day, There is only one group interview left to carry out with the managers of a residence. The interviews were delayed because of the sanitary measures. They have been completed from September 2021 to this day. The analysis of the interviews will begin soon.
