RESEARCH PROBLEM:

Mistreatment towards older adults is a known problem that worries many scientific and practice actors. Whereas mistreatment committed by relatives is widely documented, little attention is given to this day, as much in research than in intervention, to the mistreatment that older adults can commit towards their caregivers.

Yet, in Québec, in 2012, 1,3 million caregivers aged 15 years old and up offered care and in-home support to an older adult (L’Appui pour les proches aidants d’aînés, 2016). Of this number, 41% of caregivers for older adults were over 55 years old and 16 % of them were over 65 years old. With the aging of the population and the desire to stay at home for as long as possible, it is to be expected that the number of older caregivers, or not, for older adults will increase in Québec (Verville, 2016).

GOAL OF THE PROJECT OR RESEARCH QUESTION:

How to recognize mistreatment towards older adults who are caregivers and caregivers for older adults in Québec and raise the awareness of the people and the communities to prevent it?

OBJECTIVES:

General objective:

Favor the awareness raising to mistreatment towards older adults who are caregivers and caregivers for older adults to mobilise knowledge and local and regional communities.

Specific objectives:

  1. Expand the theoretical and empirical knowledge on mistreatment towards older adults who are caregivers and caregivers for older adults in order to identify the forms, manifestations and contexts in which this phenomenon occurs.
  2. Create, with the participants of discussion groups and the organisations collaborating with the project, hints of recommendations addressed to decision makers, to health organisations, to social services, to mistreatment coordinating offices of the CISSS and the CIUSSS and to community organisations aiming for the prevention of mistreatment and the promotion of wellness care of caregivers.
  3. Create an animation tool addressed to caregivers and used in an intervention context (support groups for older adults, support groups for older adults, mistreatment coordinating offices of the CISSS and the CIUSSS). The goals of the tool would be to raise awareness to the phenomenon, to know more about protecting themselves against it and present help resources on the subject. The latter will be accompanied by an informational leaflet.
  4. Mobilise the participants, the partners and the collaborating organisations in the creation and the promotion of a Charter of wellness care for caregivers accompanied by the procedures to implement of this tool locally and regionally.
  5. Develop with the partners and the project’s collaborators a proposition for a national program of wellness care for caregivers addressed to governmental decision makers accompanied by guidelines for its implantation.

METHODOLOGY:

Exploratory action-research project according to qualitative specifications.

Data collection methods:

  • Focus groups (n = 4) psychosocial practitioners working with older adults who are caregivers and caregivers for older adults within different sectors (community, public, etc.)
  • Focus groups (n = 15) with caregivers for older adults and older adults aged 50 years old and up who are caregivers.
  • Semi-directed individual interviews (n = 15) with caregivers or ex-caregivers for older adults aged 50 years old and up who have experienced mistreatment in the context of support or caregiving.
  • Analysis of the collected data.
  • Create recommendation guidelines aiming to prevent mistreatment and to promote wellness care of caregivers.
  • Create a tool to raise awareness to mistreatment and wellness care towards caregivers.
  • Creation of a Charter of wellness care for caregivers accompanied by the procedures to implement of this tool locally and regionally.
  • Develop proposition for a national program of wellness care for caregivers addressed accompanied by guidelines for its implantation.
  • Organisation of three one day long regional advisory forums in Québec, Trois-Rivières and Montréal regrouping partners, the collaborating organisations supporting older adults as well as the organisations supporting caregivers.
  • Organisation of a national advisory forum in Québec regrouping the partners, the collaborators, the organisations supporting caregivers and the organisations supporting older adults who participated to the first forums.
