RESEARCH PROBLEM:
For some years, the problem of self-neglect sees an increase in interest in the research and practice fields. Nevertheless, it is still not well documented, particularly in the French language. The complexity of this issue contributes to the intervention difficulties that many psychosocial practitioners encounter in Québec. As well as being better informed on the issue, the psychosocial practitioners want to be better equipped to intervene with self-neglecting persons (Neesham-Grenon, 2012).
GOAL OF THE PROJECT OR RESEARCH QUESTION:
Develop a Practice Guide for Intervention in Situations of Self-Neglect.
OBJECTIVES:
N.a.
METHODOLOGY:
As part of the internship:
- Review of the literature on self-neglect
- Individual interviews with psychosocial practitioners of home care sector for the clientele with a physical disability of the Centre de santé et services sociaux-Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Sherbrooke (CSSS-IUGS), which became the CIUSSS of Estrie-CHUS in 2015
- Draft of the Practice Guide for Intervention in Situations of Self-Neglect
- Review of the Practice Guide for Intervention in Situations of Self-Neglect
- Distribution of the Practice Guide for Intervention in Situations of Self-Neglect
For the current edition (Second):
- Update of the literature review
- Update of the Practice Guide for Intervention in Situations of Self-Neglect’s content
PROJECT ADVANCEMENT:
The internship was successfully completed in the autumn of 2013 and the first edition of the Practice Guide for Intervention in Situations of Self-Neglect was distributed within the Centre de santé et services sociaux-Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Sherbrooke (CSSS-IUGS), which became the CIUSSS of Estrie-CHUS in 2015.
Work on updating the second edition of the Practice Guide for Intervention in Situations of Self-Neglect started in the spring of 2016. The review of literature was updated, which allowed to review the content. The latter was validated and improved by Caroline Pelletier, a social worker within the Réseau de la santé et des services sociaux, as well as a research agent and a student within the Research Chair on Mistreatment of Older Adults.
In the summer of 2016, the Guide was translated in English, and in the autumn of 2016, the Chair used the graphic services of Basta Communication to ensure the final layout of the Guide for Intervention in Situations of Self-Neglect (French and English versions). The Guide is now available for free on the Chair’s web site. A training program is also available.
