ROLE OF CHAIR IN THE PROJECT:

The Financial Services Law Research Group (GRDSF) from Laval University and the Chair held a working meeting in June 2012. It was agreed that the Chair would collaborate with the GDRSF by performing an international literature review on the theme of financial mistreatment of older adults.

In May 2013, the Chair and the GRDSF have jointly organized a symposium in the framework of the 81st Congress of the Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS) (Francophone Association for Knowledge) which has led to the publication of two articles. They also teamed up to collaborate on the publication of a book by Les Editions Yvon Blais. This book, published in December 2014, brings together the work of several researchers, as well as comments from key speakers of the symposium. In additionof being co-editor, the Chair has also co-wrote the framework chapter of this book which is based on the literature review conducted at the beginning of the project and that outlines the state of scientific knowledge on the issue. The Chair also co-wrote the foreword, a chapter with colleagues from the Quebec National Institute of Public Health (INSPQ) on validated detection tools, a chapter with Ann Soden Ad.E. and collaborated in the writing of the article of Mr. Robert Simard, regional coordinator of the Capitale nationale region. They were both key speakers at the symposium.

RESEARCH PROBLEM:

According to service providers, material or financial abuse is viewed as the most common form of abuse against seniors. This topic raises specific issues concerning human rights, psychosocial services, support to people who are being exploited, etc. What is the situation in Quebec and throughout the world?

GOAL OF THE PROJECT OR RESEARCH QUESTION:

Documenting the phenomenon of material and financial abuse against seniors.

OBJECTIVES:

For the first chapter of this book, the objective was to perform an interdisciplinary and international literature review (spread over 10 years) on material or financial mistreatment in order to map out the state of current knowledge on the issue.

METHODOLOGY:

  • Systematic search of scientific articles (choice of keywords; francophone and anglophone data banks; selection criteria);
  • Creation of a corpus of scientific articles (PDF);
  • Completion of a reading grid for each article;
  • Presentation of the preliminary results at the symposium;
  • Drafting of a summary document from notes taken during the symposium that can be used for various purposes;
  • Drafting of two summary articles of the symposium (one published on the Chair’s and the GDRSF’s websites and another published in the Bulletin de droit économique of Laval University);
  • Drafting of a chapter based on a summary of reviewed scientific articles in the book L’exploitation financière des personnes aînées : prévention, résolution et sanction;
  • Co-writing in the drafting of two articles in the book L’exploitation financière des personnes aînées : prévention, résolution et sanction.

PROJECT ADVANCEMENT:

  • Meeting of the 2 teams in June of 2012;
  • Start of the literature review in the summer of 2012;
  • Joint organisation of a symposium as part of the ACFAS 2013 which happened at University of Laval;
