RESERCH PROBLEM :

Mistreatment of older adults is a social problem that affects nearly one in six older adults in the world (Yon, Mikton, Gassoumis and Wilber, 2017). Intervention workers from various disciplines and organizations are acting in a multi-sectoral way to counter mistreatment by addressing prevention, identification and intervention. Of these organizations, non-profit organizations (NPOs) play a key role in supporting mistreated older adults. In fact, certain NPOs implement projects or have a specific anti-mistreatment mission in which intervention workers and volunteers accompany mistreated older adults (Gouvernement du Québec, 2016). It is clear that few studies offer mistreated older adults a voice to represent their accompaniment experience, let alone when this experience takes place in an NPO.

GOAL OR RESEARCH QUESTION :

Understand the experience of older adults accompanied by a volunteer or an NPO worker in response to a situation of mistreatment.

To do this, the following research question is considered: “How did mistreated older adults experience accompaniment from NPOs dedicated to countering mistreatment?”

OBJECTIVES :

Four specific objectives were defined:

  1. To expose the facilitating factors and obstacles to requesting help that are specific to NPOs dedicated to countering the mistreatment of older adults;
  2. Identify the needs of mistreated older adults regarding support and accompaniment;
  3. To describe the nature of relationships between older adults and volunteers or intervention workers during the accompaniment process;
  4. To identify the impact of accompaniment received in the lives of older adults.

METHODOLOGY :

The thesis is associated to a study conducted by the Research Chair on Mistreatment of Older Adults. The latter involves multiple case studies (Yin, 2014) that focus on voluntary action in countering physical and financial mistreatment of older adults (ABAM-FM) (Beaulieu, Éthier et al., 2015-2018).

The thesis, in an exploratory nature, favors a qualitative approach that allows participants to study the experiences from their own perspective and their own interpretation of the situations (Turcotte, 2000). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 older adults who had received support from a volunteer or NPO worker for a situation of mistreatment. The data analysis method is based on Deslauriers’ (1991) qualitative two-step approach, which emphasizes the deconstruction of data and then the reconstruction of data. It was then a question of firstly relying on the thematic analysis as proposed by Paillé and Mucchielli (2012) and secondly, on a typological analysis inspired by Schnapper (1999, 2012).

WORK PROGRESS :

Isabelle filed the final copy of her thesis in April, 2018. In so doing, she completed the research training within the Master’s of Social Work program taught by Faculty of Social Sciences at Laval University.
