RESERCH PROBLEM :
Self-neglect, a phenomenon that is on the rise within our aging population, is a troubling public health problem linked to increased mortality, and may be a relevant factor in long-term care facilities.
GOAL OR RESEARCH QUESTION :
The study aims to explore interventions carried out by social practitioners in Quebec, and the resources they use when dealing with the particular challenges of social intervention in cases of self-neglect in older adults.
OBJECTIVES :
The targeted objectives consisted of reconstructing the concept of self-neglect for practitioners and social workers in Quebec; to identify the resources used and the actions proposed by social practitioners in their practices as they face the challenges of self-neglect cases; to suggest avenues of reflection and action for effective and promising social intervention and, finally; to propose that the issue of self-neglect be included in the search for a social solution to counter mistreatment of older adults.
METHODOLOGY :
A qualitative and exploratory study of CSSS (now CISSS or CIUSSS) social practitioners;
Individual clarification (13) and semi-structured (13) interviews;
Thematic analysis.
