Summary of the first year of activities of the DAMIA project. (January 15, 2017)

Over the last year, the project has greatly progressed thanks to the ongoing commitment of Caroline Pelletier, project coordinator at the Chair and Céline Delorme, project coordinator at DIRA Estrie. Under the direction of the Chairholder and with the assistance of students, they prepared a synthesis of the state of knowledge that relies on two systematic international literature reviews spread over ten years. The first one is on practices of community-based organizations in countering mistreatment or bullying. The second one is on factors that prevent and encourage older adults from seeking help in a context of mistreatment or bullying. They also performed a critical inventory of the awareness activities regarding mistreatment and bullying in the seven regional county municipalities (RCMs) in the Estrie region. The critical analysis of the content of these activities is completed. They will enhance this critical analysis by observing these activities.

Over the summer of 2016, the team developed the tools and have them approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the “Faculty of Literature and Human Sciences” of the University of Sherbrooke. This enables the team to initiate data collection with older adults (questionnaires, group interview protocol, socio-demographic overviews, consents, training manual for volunteers from DIRA-Estrie, administration of questionnaires to older adults, various advertisements, etc.). Up until now, 175 questionnaires (target set at 300) have been completed. Three group interviews with older adults have been conducted (target set between 12 and 15). A group interview has also been completed with managers, practitioners and volunteers from DIRA-Estrie to better understand the current awareness activities and to develop a common vision of the project. There were two meetings with the Advisory Committee. The expertise of their members was very insightful to plan and collect data.

For the activities planned next year, from January to December 2017, the team will continue to administer questionnaires as well as conducting focus groups. An interview with managers representing the collaborating organizations and various life environments is expected by spring 2017 in order to collect information on the mechanisms of existing reporting and their mode of operation. The qualitative analysis of group interviews will begin in a few weeks. The qualitative analysis of questionnaires will begin as soon as the questionnaires have been completed. As summer approaches, the team will produce a practical guide, accompanied by an implementation design (assessment) in the Estrie region.
