Marie Beaulieu participates in the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (European Region) Congress (IAGG-ER) (June 2019)

From May 23 to 25, the 9th IAGG-ER congress took place in Gothenburg, Sweden.

As part of the scientific knowledge transfer activities held during the congress, Marie Beaulieu presented a scientific poster and participated in a symposium.

Accompanied by Bridget Penhale, Marie Beaulieu presented a summary of work done by the UN’s Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWG). The OEWG seeks the UN’s adoption of a Convention on the Rights of Older Persons. Active since 2010, the working group focuses on many issues, including physical abuse and mistreatment of seniors as a violation of their human rights. The role of the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) in this field was also highlighted in their scientific poster.

During the symposium on the fight against financial exploitation of older adults – an international perspective, Marie Beaulieu presented the results of the research project entitled L’action bénévole dans la lutte contre la maltraitance matérielle et financière envers les aînés (ABAM-MF) – Volunteering to Counter Material and Financial Mistreatment of Older Persons led by the Research Chair.

The principal results brought forward in the symposium focused on:

  • Specific characteristics inherent to non-profit organizations working to counter material and financial mistreatment of older adults;
  • Specific characteristics of volunteers working within these organizations.

These results highlight the four major phases that make up the continuum of services to counter mistreatment of older adults in Quebec (In French only).
