The first week of January 2016, Adriana Herrera Duarte, as student within the Chair was the first 2016 recipient of the famous Mérite estrien. This prize, awarded weekly by the Sherbrooke community, rewards and pays tribute to a person or organisation from the region whose commitment stood out.
Adriana is a Colombian who immigrated to Sherbrooke in 2003 as a political refugee with her three children. A defender of human rights in her home country, she continued to be in Québec by completing a bachelor’s degree in social work at the University of Sherbrooke. She is currently completing her masters in the same field within the establishment. Wishing to help other, she started the project Adopter une famille pour Noël eleven years ago. The goal is to pair families or single person who are in precarious situations with people of the community. These people are invited to meet and offer provision basket to the family they chose to “adopt” for Christmas. Over the years, this project kept growing, so much so that in 2015, 92 families were paired.
The Chair’s team congratulates her for her sustained commitment to this cause and wishes her good success in her future projects!
