Subject: The practices of the provincial grouping of users’ committees in connection with the fight against mistreatment
This research aims to deepen our understanding of l’arrimage (synchronization) between all the practices and actors concerned of the provincial grouping of users’ committees with regard to the issue of mistreatment. Ultimately, the results will be used to develop a program to counter mistreatment and to promote it in health and social services establishments, improve the quality of life of residents and the quality of services offered in the network, by influencing the interventions of practitioners and decision-makers in health and social services as well as organizational policies, etc. These actions will result in improved health and quality of life for the Quebec population and reduce public health and legal costs (complaints, etc.). |

Master in Gerontology, University of Sherbrooke Subject : Analysis of instrumented intervention in mistreatment of older adults situation The transition from a public policy, rigorous as it may be, to actual practice raises many issues, including the best ways to support practitioners in their work. This support often materializes, and increasingly so, through the dissemination of clinical tools of detection, assessment, planning, etc. Decision-makers, administrators and practitioners all hope to find the tools that will allow them to increase their capacity to take action against mistreatment. However, at present, the tools in this domain are not yet the subject of a clear directive as to those which should be used. Professionals are thus involved in situations of mistreatment of older adults with various tools of which the real use remains largely unknown. We are therefore interested in the instrumented intervention of practitioners whose work involves professional activities that are carried out through interaction with and intended for others in order to identify the implicit knowledge contained in their use of tools to support their intervention. |

Ph.D. in gerontology, Université de Sherbrooke Subject: The vulnerabilization process from the point of view of the experience of peer helpers involved in the prevention of mistreatment : a gender-based analysis. This PhD project aims to understand how vulnerability is invested with meaning in the practice of peer helpers, and this, in the field of mistreatment of older adults. More specifically, the project will describe the intervention practices of adult peers involved in the prevention of mistreatment. It will highlight the ways in which peer helpers mobilize notions of vulnerability and risk factors in their practice with older adults in mistreatment situations. In addition, this project aims to understand how peer helpers report the vulnerabilization process of these people by means of a gender-based analysis. |

Subject : In what ways are situations of mistreatment of older adults in residential institutions addressed?
Through my thesis project, I would like to learn about the different dynamics existing between an elderly person with diminishing autonomy and the caregiver. More precisely, I am looking for the types of dynamic that can lead a vulnerable person to experience mistreatment, abuse or neglect while in a residential institution. Several questions fuel my thesis project’s preliminary positioning, the general question of which being: in what ways are situations of mistreatment of older adults in residential institutions addressed? From this general question arises a series of specific questions: Did or did not the dynamic of mistreatment exist before the admission of the elderly person to permanent accommodation? When did doubts about mistreatment appear in the file? During follow-up in the home? Following admission to accommodation? When did intervention take place? What type of intervention was carried out? What were the effects of this intervention? Etc. |

Master’s in Health Law, Université de Sherbrooke Subject: Home abuse of the elderly The Master’s project broaches the mistreatment of the elderly living at home by identifying the main difficulties posed by the diagnostic of mistreatment. The ethical aspect of the diagnostic and the main legal and ethical dilemmas faced by health professionals are also broached, in addition to confidentiality, the disclosure requirement, as well as the requirement for intervention by professionals. In conclusion, the study is a reflection on the possible solutions to the problems identified. |
