The development of the Policy Framework to Counter Mistreatment of Older Adults in Institutional and Long-Term Care Settings was carried out by theIntegrated Health and Social Services University Network for West-Central Montreal, with the support of the Ministry of Health and Social Services and the Ministry of Family. As part of this work that spanned over six months, Marie Beaulieu, the Chairholder, was consulted as an external expert.

The Chair has given many conferences during the months of May and June. In May, the Chair was invited to present its works on bullying as well as those of Jessica Calvé on self-neglect to regional coordinators regarding mistreatment of older adults as part of their annual training days. In the continuity of this activity, Marie Beaulieu discussed with the Seniors’ Secretariat concerning the impacts of the works on scientific articles produced by Quebecers.

The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day(WEAAD) is recognized annually on June 15 and is promoted by various means across Quebec. Since it is our area of research, we are therefore frequently approached for conferences throughout the month of June (as illustrated in the previous news!). Building on last year’s success, we wanted to distribute once again purple ribbons and awareness bookmarks in our workplace.

Since 2014, countering bullying has been one of the priority actions for the Government of Québec. The interest showed for this issue has been steadily growing. That was the main topic of the latest issue of the Service Social journal from Laval University. A call for papers was launched in 2015.

In April this year, the Ministry of Family launched a specific call for briefs that sought the opinion of key actors on issues and actions to be taken into consideration in the next Governmental Action Plan to Counter Mistreatment of Older Adults 2017-2022.

Françoise Le Borgne-Uguen is professor and researcher in sociology at the University of Western Brittany (Brest) in France. Both interested in aging, Françoise Le Borgne-Uguen and Marie Beaulieu have had the opportunity to work collaboratively for the past ten years. Also, with Yves Couturier, they co-lead Marie Crevier’s doctoral thesis.

Each year, Marie Beaulieu supervises several master’s students in their thesis or essays, as well as doctoral students. Over the last months, she has been supervising the essays of Audrey Allard, Jessica Calvé and Marika Lussier-Therrien, all of them master’s students in Social Work from the University of Sherbrooke. After several months of being committed in their studies, they finally submitted their essay at the beginning of June.

Bill 399, introduced at the Quebec’s National Assembly in October 2013, was dealing with the implementation of mechanisms to report mistreatment of older adults in nursing homes. In order to discuss this subject thoughtfully, Réjean Hébert, who was the minister of health and social services at the time, believed that it was better to document the issue of mistreatment in nursing homes, as well as to implement mandatory reporting. He then issued a threefold mandate to the Chair:

The IPRAS project (Integrated Police Response for Abused Seniors) that started in July 2013 has finally come to an end. During the press conference on April 21, the City of Montreal’s Mayor, Denis Coderre announced that the IPRAS model developed in this project will be gradually implemented in the City of Montreal Police Service (SPVM) in the next few weeks.

The Quebec Association on Gerontology (AQG) published, in March 2016, the issue no. 3, volume 13 of the Vie et vieillissement journal. This issue was aiming at addressing the various aspects of the caregivers’ reality. Marie Crevier, a doctoral student, andArzemina Spahic-Blazevic, former master student, both under the direction of Marie Beaulieu, published an article to highlight aspects of their study project which are related to this subject.
