Adriana Herrera Duarte, a master's student in social work at the Université de Sherbrooke since 2014, filed the final version of her master's essay in July. Her essay entitled La lutte contre la maltraitance envers les personnes âgées hispanophones : réflexion à partir d’un programme de sensibilisation (Countering Mistreatment of Spanish-Speaking Older Adults: Reflection from an Awareness Program), was written under the direction of Marie Beaulieu.

The Chair was invited to launch the Governmental Action Plan to Counter Elder Mistreatment 2017-2022. The launch of this second action plan was held in Québec City on June 15, 2017, the date of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The Minister responsible for Seniors and Anti-Bullying, Francine Charbonneau, announced a total investment of $ 45.8 million over six years for the implementation of the plan, which has a total of 52 measures.

The National Assembly has formally adopted Bill 115, which aims to : « combat maltreatment of seniors and other persons of full age in vulnerable situations ». Since the introduction of the bill in the fall of 2016, special consultations and public hearings have taken place.

A first scientific article entitled A systematic review on community-based interventions for elder abuse and neglect, co-authored by researchers Gwendolyn Fearinf, Christine L. Sheppard, Lynn McDonald, Marie Beaulieu and Sander L. Hitzig, was published in The Journal of Elder Abuse & Neglect. The purpose of this research was to analyse the data available in scientific literature with respect to the effectiveness of community-based interventions for mistreated older adults.

Thanks to funding from the IXe Commission mixte permanente Québec/Wallonie-Bruxelles (IXth Permanent Joint Board Québec- Wallonia-Brussels), obtained in the summer of 2016, Marie Beaulieu, Chairholder and Roxane Leboeuf, Chair coordinator, were able to carry out a work mission in Belgium with their collaborators, Respect Seniors, the Walloon Agency to counter the mistreatment of older adults.

In January 2017, the Seniors and Pensions Policy Secretariat within Employment and Social Development Canada (SPPS-ESDC) offered selected experts the opportunity to compete for the mandate to revise two books regarding the Social Isolation of Seniors Toolkit in order to better respondto the needs of three target populations at risk of social isolation:

The study of the mistreatment of older adults can be done from several perspectives. This is clearly demonstrated by the vast scope and the diversity of the topics covered by the five papers published by the Chair since the beginning of the year 2017. Marie Beaulieu, the Chairholder, had the opportunity to participate in various symposia throughout the month of March. On March 9, she gave a presentation on L’intersectorialité : incontournable approche pour lutter contre la maltraitance! (Intersectorality: The Indispensible Approach to Counter Mistreatment!). This presentation was delivered during the symposium on social work as part of the Human Sciences Research Day held at the University of Sherbrooke.
