In August 2016, Jordan Bédard Lessard was awarded a $3000 graduate scholarship from the Desjardins Foundation in the Other Disciplines category. Jordan is master’s student in Social Work at the University of Sherbrooke. He is currently writing his essay in the framework of the ABAM-MF project (Volunteering to Counter Financial and Material Mistreatment of Older Adults) under the director of Marie Beaulieu. Jordan is focusing specifically on the professionalization of volunteer action to counter financial and material mistreatment of older adults.

On July 11 and 13, 2016, the Chair had the pleasure of welcoming Françoise Le Borgne-Uguen (PhD) while she was in Québec for the Congrès international des sociologues de langue française (International Congress of French-Speaking Sociologists). Françoise Le Borgne-Uguen is professor and researcher in Sociology at the University of Western Brittany (Brest) in France. She takes a keen interest in various aspects of aging, especially the legal protections of older adults.

The IPRAS Model (Integrated Police Response for Abused Seniors) was jointly developed by the Chair and the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) (City of Montréal Police Service) as part of a three-year action research project. This project was carried out, thanks to a $700 000 grant from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.

The development of the Policy Framework to Counter Mistreatment of Older Adults in Institutional and Long-Term Care Settings was carried out by theIntegrated Health and Social Services University Network for West-Central Montreal, with the support of the Ministry of Health and Social Services and the Ministry of Family. As part of this work that spanned over six months, Marie Beaulieu, the Chairholder, was consulted as an external expert.

The Chair has given many conferences during the months of May and June. In May, the Chair was invited to present its works on bullying as well as those of Jessica Calvé on self-neglect to regional coordinators regarding mistreatment of older adults as part of their annual training days. In the continuity of this activity, Marie Beaulieu discussed with the Seniors’ Secretariat concerning the impacts of the works on scientific articles produced by Quebecers.

The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day(WEAAD) is recognized annually on June 15 and is promoted by various means across Quebec. Since it is our area of research, we are therefore frequently approached for conferences throughout the month of June (as illustrated in the previous news!). Building on last year’s success, we wanted to distribute once again purple ribbons and awareness bookmarks in our workplace.

Since 2014, countering bullying has been one of the priority actions for the Government of Québec. The interest showed for this issue has been steadily growing. That was the main topic of the latest issue of the Service Social journal from Laval University. A call for papers was launched in 2015.

In April this year, the Ministry of Family launched a specific call for briefs that sought the opinion of key actors on issues and actions to be taken into consideration in the next Governmental Action Plan to Counter Mistreatment of Older Adults 2017-2022.

Françoise Le Borgne-Uguen is professor and researcher in sociology at the University of Western Brittany (Brest) in France. Both interested in aging, Françoise Le Borgne-Uguen and Marie Beaulieu have had the opportunity to work collaboratively for the past ten years. Also, with Yves Couturier, they co-lead Marie Crevier’s doctoral thesis.
