The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day(WEAAD) is recognized annually on June 15 and is promoted by various means across Quebec. Since it is our area of research, we are therefore frequently approached for conferences throughout the month of June (as illustrated in the previous news!). Building on last year’s success, we wanted to distribute once again purple ribbons and awareness bookmarks in our workplace.

Since our offices are located in the Research Centre on Aging which is adjacent to the Marguerite d'Youville residential centre in Sherbrooke, we can reach a diverse public: residents, staff members of all sorts (from the hairdresser to the physician), visitors of all ages, researchers, etc. Once again this year, we successfully distributed nearly 200 ribbons and bookmarks.

Still on June 15, we also responded to the request of the Sherbrooke-based organization Colombie-Estrie, which was organizing for the first time an awareness-raising activity to counter mistreatment of older adults. This activity took place at the Marché de la gare (public market) in Sherbrooke with a hint of intercultural and intergenerational flavour. Participants were invited to take part in a march and chanting slogans. Then, a few local speakers took the floor, including the Research Chair and Paul Martel, the regional coordinator for the Estrie region to countering mistreatment of older adults. The activity ended with a snack and music. Great success for this first edition!
